Plastic Surgery Board Certification Explained

by Pamela Howard, Founder:

First of all, board certification is a voluntary achievement. It is a gold standard when researching a physician's credentials. A physician's board certification is supposed to be a clear indicator the physician is qualified to perform within the specific specialty.

The American Board of Medical Specialties oversees the various board certifications for each specialty of medicine. In order for a doctor to qualify for board certification with the American Board of Plastic Surgery, they must have completed the approved training program(s) by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Upon completion of the required and approved residency training programs, the doctor may sit for a written and oral exam. Certification is awarded upon successful completion of both exams and if they meet particular general and professional requirements.

The American Board of Plastic Surgery is the only recognized plastic surgery board certification by the American Board of Medical Specialties. There are many other board certifications that pertain to cosmetic or plastic surgery but they are obviously not recognized boards for a reason: they do not require formal plastic surgery training.
